DIFFICULT PEOPLE AT WORK
'A bend in the road is not the end of the road... unless you
fail to make the turn.' Author Unknown
When clients talk to me about career change, often their unhappiness stems
from a difficult relationship at work. These clients are always emotionally
intelligent, capable and sensitive people who have inadvertently found
themselves in a relationship dynamic that is doing more harm than good.
I'm reluctant to say they've been bullied because I think the word can be
overused but most of these people admit that the experience has been
somewhat traumatic and has always damaged their confidence. In many cases,
this creates a vicious cycle - their confidence is low so they feel
apprehensive about applying for new roles yet staying in the role further
erodes their sense of self worth.
Relationship dynamics are complex - both within the workplace and outside of
it. Most difficult people have issues of their own and many lack the
awareness to manage their frustrations in an effective way. Their intention
is usually not to cause harm but their lack of self awareness can make them
oblivious to the impact they have.
